Add your own "Create New" options in KDE Dolphin

Dolphin is one of the best applications in the KDE environment. It is a great time-saver, and enough reason to use KDE as your desktop environment in my opinion. A great feature is that you can add your own "Create New" options to the context menu that appears when you right-click. The image below shows what I am talking about. In this example, I will show you how to create the highlighted Freeplane item.

The files that describe the items in your "Create New" menu are located in the $HOME/.local/share/templates directory, as shown below. There is currently no .desktop file for Freeplane, which means there is no Freeplane option in the Create New menu. We will now create a .desktop file to add an item to the menu.

Create a new text file named "FreeplaneFile.desktop" in the $HOME/.local/share/templates directory, and add the following content.

Next, place a new, empty Freeplane file in the $HOME/.local/share/templates/.source directory, and name it "freeplane.mm" as shown in line 5 of the .desktop file above. The result of this is the following:

Now you can create a new Freeplane file in a blink without losing speed. It's as easy as that!
